Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand wants to see striker Jamie Vardy make a surprise move to Wrexham AFC should he leave Leicester City this summer.

Vardy has been at the King Power Stadium since 2012, when he joined the club from Fleetwood Town.

In that time, the striker has experienced many successes with the football club, including this season, as he played a crucial role in the club not only getting promoted but winning the Championship by a single point.

The Leicester man signed a two-year deal in 2022, which now runs out this summer, but it has been hinted by manager Enzo Maresca that a new deal for the striker could be on its way, meaning his time at the club might not be over just yet.

Maresca told Leicestershire Live prior to the club's final game of the season: "It’s all season that you ask about Jamie! Jamie Vardy is Leicester. Jamie Vardy, I didn’t discover him. Jamie Vardy will always score goals in his life.

"He’s going to score goals until he’s 45 because it’s in his blood to score goals. We are very lucky that he’s our player. He’s scored many goals.

“Not yet (we didn’t discuss the contract) because the target was to finish in the right way. We have a game on Saturday, and then we’ll sit, but my feeling is that he’s going to stay. This is just my feeling, but if I were to decide…”

It was reported by Sky Sports that given the Foxes are back in the top division, it is expected that Vardy will agree to a new one-year deal in the coming days.

If a new deal isn't agreed upon, Ferdinand has urged the veteran striker to join newly promoted Wrexham AFC in League One next season.

It looks as though Vardy could be set to extend his stay with Leicester beyond this summer, but if he doesn't, Ferdinand has revealed that he would love to see the striker join Wrexham.

The former Manchester United defender did say he wants to see Vardy play in the Premier League again, but if he were to leave Leicester, he would love him to join the Red Dragons in League One.

Ferdinand said on Vibe with Five, via The Mirror: "He’s got to play another season in the Premier League. I want to see him get a couple of goals in the Premier League, it’s nice. The only club I’d like him to go to if he leaves is Wrexham."

YouTuber Stephen Howson then asked why, to which Ferdinand responded with: "It’s got that Hollywood feel, and he’s had a bit of a Hollywood career. Started from the bottom, now we’re here, and he wants to reverse that."

Jamie Vardy’s 2023/24 stats for Leicester City

The 2023/24 Championship season was another successful campaign to add to the list for Leicester striker Vardy.

At the age of 37, the forward still managed to play a pivotal role in the Foxes’ triumph and continued to be a nuisance for Championship defenders, like he has for all of his career.

Vardy played 35 times in the league this season, 18 of which came from the start, as Maresca managed the players' game time.

Despite being in and out of the starting XI, Vardy still continued to contribute, with him finishing the season with 18 Championship goals.

He had another two in total, as he scored in the EFL Cup and the FA Cup, while he also contributed to two assists, both coming in the league.

Vardy was mightily impressive, as he averaged a goal every 99 minutes of football, with his goal conversion rate being an incredible 31%, as per Sofascore.com.

Jamie Vardy is unlikely to play for another English team

If Vardy does leave Leicester this summer, given that his contract is due to expire, it seems unlikely that the striker will join another English team.

Given what the forward has achieved while playing for the Foxes, it seems unlikely that he will want to either go up against them in what remains of his career or help another side that isn’t Leicester in English football.

Wrexham would probably jump at the chance to sign the former England international, but it seems like a deal that can only be dreamed about at this stage.

It seems a new deal could be coming his way at Leicester, as the club could look to keep the experienced forward on for another year in the Premier League following promotion.
